Windows & Mac

Windows

On Windows, the quickest way to take a screenshot is to press the Print Screen key on your keyboard (often near the top right, may be labelled as PrtScn or similar.
On some keyboards, you may also need to hold down the Fn key while pressing Print Screen, if it is the secondary function).
If you wish to only capture the current window, hold down Alt while pressing Print Screen.

The screen shot is saved to your clipboard, you may now go into your application, such as Microsoft Word or Zoom and press Ctrl + V to paste.

Windows 10/11

For more advanced options, press Windows + Shift + S to open Screen Snip (requires Windows 10 1703 or later).
From left to right, the options are; rectangular snip (draw a box around what you want to capture), freeform snip (similar to rectangular, however you can draw any shape you like), window snip (select the window to capture. This will also allow you to capture right click menus and similar), and fullscreen snip. The resulting capture is saved to the clipboard, so you may paste it where required.

Snip & Sketch (Windows 10)

For even more advanced control, including drawing on your captures, use Windows Snip & Sketch (Windows 10 version 1809 or later). Snip & Sketch will automatically be available in the lower right corner of your screen after capturing a screenshot - click on this notification (available in the Action Centre after the fact if you missed it) to open the full editing options described below. Alternatively, for more options including a delay, read on to discover how to use the full Snip & Sketch app.

Open your Start menu by clicking on the Windows logo in the corner, or by pressing the Windows button on your keyboard (look near the spacebar). Now type in ‘snip & sketch’ to search, and then press enter.
Now you have opened Snip & Sketch, you can either click ‘New’ to capture a new screenshot, or click the dropdown arrow next to ‘New’ to take a screenshot in either 3 or 10 seconds (useful if you need to open a menu before taking a screenshot). The options for capturing are the same as when you access the quick screen snip function via the keyboard shortcut above.

Once you have captured your screenshot, it will be presented to you in an editing window, where you may annotate or crop your capture. From left to right, the options are; touch writing (use your touchscreen or mouse to write on your capture), ballpoint pen, pencil, highlighter, eraser (only works on your annotations, not on the original content of the screenshot), ruler (for measurements) and crop.
Once you have finished your edits, click the paper icon to copy to your clipboard, or the floppy disk to save the image.
